I love a good B-Movie horror and Grind Mind’s 2018 short The Mummering is a good B-Movie. It is creepy, it is scary and, most definitely, gory.

The short is set in Newfoundland and depicts the local mummering tradition, albeit in a more gruesome way. It’s probably not for kids… at least not kids you’re hoping will spend the holiday season with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads.

I appreciate that it presents mummering as frightening… because it is. The whole affair revolves around adults concealing their identity, speaking in false voices and drinking. There’s a definite element of mystery/danger. People always believe they are letting costumed friends and family into their homes… but they never really know.

On rare occasions mummering has gotten downright dangerous — there have been assaults and even a murder. At one point, mummering was made illegal.
