Nalujuk Night Documentary

Since I posted last year’s piece on Newfoundland Old Christmas Day customs, I’ve been asked about the January 6th Labrador Inuit custom of Nalujuk Night. Never having been to Labrador in January I can’t offer any personal reflection but I can point you toward someone who can.

Filmmaker Jennie Williams of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador has made a 13-minute documentary called Nalujuk Night. It presents a first-person view of Nalujuk Night in Nain. The documentary shows the Nalujuit, who are skeletal-faced beings that appear on the sea ice and walk toward Nain, where they interact with the people of the town.

It’s an interesting documentary that makes Nalujuk Night look like a fun and frightening evening!

It’s totally worthy watching.
