Count me in.
If you’re familiar with my work at all, you probably already know I’m eagerly anticipating Below, the new Netflix series. It checks just about every box for me: it’s set and filmed in Newfoundland, features local talent, explores local culture and —just to sweeten the deal— it has a sea monster.
You know I love a good sea monster story.
And while I’ve written about quite a few Newfoundland sea monsters over the years, it’s not every day one turns up with a Netflix budget.
The six-episode series follows a fisherman who must fight to protect his family when a mysterious sea creature begins terrorizing his outport community.
Below also brings together some impressive talent, both in front of and behind the camera. The cast includes Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis, and Charlie Heaton, while the writing team includes Karen Walton, Perry Chafe, and Natty Zavitz. Episodes are directed by Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver, and Stephen Dunn.
The trailer, released this week, looks fantastic. It’s cinematic and high-energy, with plenty of tension, and it manages to show just enough to make me curious without giving too much away. Which is probably a good thing, particularly when you’re dealing with a mysterious creature!
Needless to say, I can’t wait to dive in.
All six episodes of Below will be available on Netflix, October 8th.
