Is This the World by The Little Phrase
There are albums you put on when you want to disengage, relax, and forget the world. And then there are albums that look you in the eye and start asking question. Big questions. Questions like, ‘Have you ever really thought about what it means to be a person?
Is This the World, the debut album from The Little Phrase, is very much the latter.
Fronted by Shannon Hoff, a philosophy professor at Memorial University, The Little Phrase describes themselves as an art-pop indie band. And that feels accurate, although it doesn’t really prepare you for the diversity of sounds you’ll encounter on their album. There’s indie pop, certainly, but also jazz and even moments of, I don’t know, progressive rock(?). Whatever the genre, it’s got lush arrangements throughout and lyrics that ask bigger questions than your typical pop song.

Identity? How we relate to the world around us? The body? It’s all there. But while the album ventures into some pretty hefty territory, the songs engage and entertain as much as they encourage reflection.
If I were you, I’d listen to the album in its entirety. But, if you want a quick taste, start with the title track. It’s a song that becomes more the longer you listen to it — it’s beautiful and slightly unsettling.
Turn it on… and tune in because it’s so much more than background music. Is This the World deserves your attention — and rewards you when you give it. It’s thoughtful, adventurous and full of unexpected turns.
