Floating After Farley

TV

Martine Blue’s new 6-part documentary series Floating After Farley is a perfect piece of escapist TV. It’s got beautiful Newfoundland scenery, a what’s-going-to-happen-next adventure and great storytelling all arranged in easy bite-sized pieces.

Blue, her partner Issac, and dog Finski undertake a journey inspired by the travels of Farley Mowat, following the path recounted in his books The Boat Who Wouldn’t Float and Bay of Spirits. Through engaging interviews, they uncover the story of Mowat in Newfoundland and the history of the island’s (too seldom seen) south coast.

It’s definitely worth watching.

On a personal note, I was very happy to see the south coast community of Gaultois featured so prominently in the series. About 20 years ago, I lived in Gaultois — it was unlike anywhere I’d ever been. It was a very close-knit island community accessible only by passenger ferry. There were no cars in town and most places were connected by boardwalk. I didn’t know what I was getting into when I decided to move there — which is sort of why I decided to move there. I wanted a new experience, and I definitely got it! I have nothing but positive memories of the two years I lived there. I met fantastic people, learned a lot and, maybe, had the best social life of my life!
