Harbour Le Cou by Allan Ricketts

I don’t know a whole lot about Torbay-native Allan Ricketts beyond what I’ve read on his website — but I do know I’m really enjoying his newly released take on the Newfoundland song Harbour Le Cou. It’s a beautiful rendition of a darkly funny Newfoundland classic — well-paced and thoughtfully delivered, with just the right touch of restraint.

Told from the perspective of a sailor who’s courting a woman in Harbour Le Cou while his wife and children wait back in Torbay, the song has a lovely melody that Ricketts’ vocal only enhances. It’s so easy on the ears, you might miss the dark humour buried in the lyrics — and the sailor’s well-deserved comeuppance.

The track is well worth a listen — it’s out now wherever you get your music. Add it to your playlists, and while you’re at it, check out Ricketts’ earlier release Rivers.

I’m obsessed with music from Newfoundland and Labrador…

It’s fresh, wild, and full of surprises. The artists here are pumping out so much new stuff, it’s hard to keep up. So, I started a playlist of my faves—tons of genres, but the only rule is they’re local and totally repeat-worthy. I update it regularly, so follow along (on Spotify, Apple Music or Youtube).

Trust me, there’s a ton of good stuff coming your way.
