SPARKS by The Way East
The Way East is a St. John’s-based four-piece, rock band that has been releasing single and winning fans from all over. It’s easy to see why.
Their brand of alternative/ progressive rock brings to mind the best of the Canadian alt music scene of the 90s — think high-energy production, infectious hooks and anthemic choruses.
The Way East? Think high-energy production, infectious hooks and anthemic choruses.
I was a big fan of their first two singles — High School Locker and Closer — but they may just have been the warm up. Their latest offering Sparks, written by band member Chris Hibbs and produced by Krisjan Leslie, takes the song craft to the next-level, doubles down on the 90s-vibe, and easily establishes them as one of the most exciting local bands making music today.
Thematically, the track explores the struggles within relationships and how hard it can be to ‘start a spark’.

Keep an eye out for The Way East’s debut album Broken Memories. It’s due in the spring of 2026.
The Way East’s new single Closer takes all the pop-rock hooks of High School Locker and pairs them with sharp lyrics about gossip, drama, and knowing when to walk away.
